In this book, Michael Harrington explores the decline of traditional religious belief in the Western world and asks what will replace religion as the foundation of morality, ethics, and social order. Although Harrington was an atheist and democratic socialist, he argued that the disappearance of religious authority could create a moral and political crisis unless societies developed new shared values.
